“Doing or Dabbling!”
January 18, 2010
My responsibility as a Christian is my very own spiritual growth and maturity. I must grow in grace and in knowledge. I must die to self and I must die to criticism and pettiness. The main thing must remain the main thing. Hopefully each one of us can chart some progress in spiritual growth and maturity. It should be important as a believer that I move from “dabbling into doing!” It was D. L. Moody that said, “Give me a man who says, ‘This one thing I do’ …not these fifty I dabble in…” Although we hear a lot about “multitasking” today we do need to remember what our course and objective should be.
I rejoice in the tender mercies of God and the awesome grace that He has shed abroad in my heart. It has developed a “passion” in me for people, world missions and church building. Passion was defined by one as “an intense emotion that compels action.”
If we only develop zeal without knowledge then we have failed. The Lord has given me a wonderful congregation to pastor and it has been my deepest desire that the “joy factor” be what John described in his writings, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth..” III John (vs 4)
However, as we walk in the truth we are also commissioned by our Lord to carry out the Great Commission. It is with a desperate heart cry that I speak today. Calling all believers, hear me please. Let’s not dabble in Great Commission living and serving!
The Great Commission responsibility is for each believer to be a witness. (Matthew 28 and Acts 1) I wonder if we are dabbling “at” or “in” our Great Commission call. Recently the Lord allowed us to baptize 9 wonderful believers and I was once again reminded of the importance of going into all the world, preaching the gospel and baptizing. What a privilege!
Now back to the main thought with a question: Are you doing anything constructive in your local church? Are you involved in witnessing and attempting to win the lost?
I do hope that you are not living a dry, lifeless life, wandering in the wilderness of the world of self. Well did Solomon warn us, “keep your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life…!”
So with the thought of “doing” or “dabbling” it is time to ask another question. Which one fits you right now? Are you a “doer” of the word or a “dabbler” in the word!
May the Lord richly bless you today! Let’s serve Him together and make 2010 our best year for the glory of God … and for the good of mankind!
