01-21-08 THE BIBLE AND SCIENCE

This Sunday and Monday, January 27 and 28, Dr. Tommy Mitchell will be speaking in our Winter Bible Conference. The obvious theme will be “Answers in Genesis!” He will speak three times on Sunday and in two sessions on Monday evening. Don’t miss out on these great sessions.

Let me suggest some things for you to consider as we address the Bible and science. Allow me to quote Dr. Henry Morris:

“Science seeks to understand and describe the nature of the universe and all its components, the processes that take place therein, the nature of life and all living creatures, and especially the character and meaning of human life. Commonly the various sciences are, for convenience, grouped into the physical sciences, the life sciences and the social sciences, although obviously every field of scientific study is related in some way to every other field.”

This is a rather simplistic division of some rather complex fields of science. It is not my intention in this blog to get extremely technical in presentation. I only want to draw attention to the “battle between the two,” science and the Bible!

Morris went on to say,

“Two widespread and very harmful misconceptions about the relation of science and the Bible are prevalent. One, very common among skeptics and unbelievers is that the Bible is an antiquated religious book, filled with scientific fallacies and mistakes reflecting the naïve cosmology of the primitive tribes of the Near East. The other misconception is widely held by professing Christian people, namely that the Bible is a book of true religion dealing solely with spiritual subjects and that, where it seems to touch on matters of objective science and history, it must be interpreted spiritually or allegorically rather than literally.”

He further stated that to these individuals the school of thought is: “The Bible is not a book of science, but of religion.” We must realize that the Bible is wholly reliable on every subject with which it deals, or it is not the Word of God. The man that tries to “winnow” the wheat from the chaff in Scripture, passing judgment on which portions he will and will not believe, is actually claiming divine wisdom for himself, and becoming his own Authority, his own Word. He may as well write his own Bible.

The real truth of the matter is that the Bible indeed is verbally inspired and literally true throughout. Whenever it deals with scientific or historical matters of fact, it means exactly what it says and is completely accurate. When figures of speech are used, their meaning is always evident in the context, just as in other books. There is not scientific fallacy in the Bible at all. “Science” is knowledge, and the Bible is a book of true and factual knowledge throughout, on every subject with which it deals. Conclusion:  the Bible is a book of science!

Let me quote Morris one final time today,

“Science is concerned first of all with the fact that the universe does exist and that things do happen there. It must deal, therefore, with those “things” (Matter) and the “happenings” (Energy). However, there must also be a matrix “in which” (Space) and “during which” (Time) those things can happen. It is difficult to separate, of course, between the “things” and the “happenings.” Each necessarily involves the other and complements the other, so that Matter-Energy could be considered, as it were, a unitary phenomenon occurring everywhere in Space and Time.

The universe, therefore, must be a “continuum of Space, Time and Matter-Energy.” No one of the three can exist without the other. Therefore, the entire continuum must have existed simultaneously from the beginning.”

I summarize with a simple position, and what I call a very fundamental truth:

“In the beginning (Time) God created the heaven (Space) and the earth (Matter)” Genesis 1:1

The foundation verse of the Bible thus yields the foundational fact of science!

Do you think the Bible and Science can ever be friends?

Blessings, Pastor Sears
