Christian Worldview (Pt 1):
"One Nation Under God! Does It Really Matter?”
We must answer with a booming voice, YES! YES! It does matter!
We are facing another election year and the country is embroiled in what I would like to call a “worldview war!” The conflict is between those who want to be “one nation under God” and those campaigning to be “one nation under man!” It seems to boil down to a “conservative right” and a “secular left” and at the heart of each worldview is the question of whether God “is” or “is not!”
In his book, One Nation Under Man, author Brannon Howse (author, president and founder of Worldview Weekend Conferences) says:
|
"Christians start with the presuppositional worldview that God is alive and well and that God’s moral law, which is a reflection of God’s character and nature, is instilled in the laws of nature and engraved on the hearts and conscience of every person. Thus, it serves as the compass and foundation of all values, beliefs, ideas and behavior.”
“The secular left begins with the presuppositional worldview that God does not exist or that He doesn’t matter; and thus instead of maintaining values, beliefs, ideas, and behavior based on the moral law of God, they trust in the minds of men and women. The secular left believes individuals create their own reality and their own standards, and conduct their lives accordingly.”
|
It really does matter how our nation was founded! Again quoting Howse:
|
“If this country had been founded by today’s secular left, not only would they have established a nation based on their religious world-view and presupposition that God is not; they would have created a government that does not allow for the public practice of Christianity or any other belief system incompatible with the elites who run things. The left seeks to remove “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance and eliminate congressional chaplains. They want to prohibit servicemen from saying, “God bless you” at military funerals and to make sure no crosses are engraved on tombstones in a national cemetery.”
|
To summarize this war, I quote Howse further:
|
“Americans are embroiled in a religious worldview war for the very heart and soul of America. Our Founding Fathers knew whose side they were on. They built a strong foundation and left us a godly legacy on which to build our future. They primed us with everything we need to stand for God, and the battle is now ours to lose!”
|
Under President Ronald Reagan the U.S. Congress declared 1983 as the year of the Bible. Newsweek (1983) said, “For centuries the Bible has exerted an unrivaled influence on American culture, politics, and social life. Now historians are discovering that the Bible, perhaps even more than the Constitution, is our founding document….”
Any American who wants to know whether America was founded as a nation under God only needs to spend a few hours reading the writings of the Founding Fathers. Dr. Jedidiah Morse, a Founding Father who believed Christianity to be the foundational worldview of America’s republic proclaimed, “Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all the blessings which flow from them, must fall with them!”
JFK said in his inaugural address, “The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God!”
In closing we should remember that our obligations are two-fold:
- First to our God and second to our nation!
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: and the people that He hath chosen for his own inheritance…” Psalm 33:12
Our allegiance to the Word of God and the God of the Word should make us great citizens!
Blessings, Pastor Sears
